“Every single day, we have the privilege of waking up and developing cutting-edge technology,” says Omer Picciotto, head of software and development of ground systems for UAVs in the Aerospace division. According to him, the security implications are a major part of the process – “It is impossible to connect to a company without connecting to the essence of the product and its performance in the field. Our job is not only limited to lines of code – but to the things our code accomplishes.”
My story
Omer started working at Elbit after serving in the ’Sky Rider’ unit in the artillery corps, which employs UAVs. Currently, Omer and his team handle the development and inspection of all the UAVs manufactured by the group. “We develop all the systems related to preparing the UAV on the ground, before takeoff,” he explains. “Our work mostly involves coding, but we’re also responsible for integrating the software, so we often go out to the labs, or even out to the field.”
According to Omer, one of his greatest sources of pride is his privilege to work at the very core of Israeli security: “We work extensively with the Air Force. During operational activities, we are usually stationed at Air Force support bases. In the end, we get to engage in the synergy between software and engineering. For me, it is an immense honor to be involved in the development of systems that will soon take flight in the UAVs and soar in the sky.”
Omer and his wife, Dafna, have two young girls, ages 3 and 7. One of his favorite hobbies is listening to podcasts. “A few years ago, I realized I love learning things – it doesn’t matter what they are,” he says. “I listen to a lot of podcasts that talk about trivial knowledge or history – I really love it.”
